The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka confirms that 2 hour power cuts will be imposed in two slots during the period that the 2022 Advanced Level Examination is conducted.
The PUCSL said 40-minute power cuts will be imposed during the day and 1 hour and 20-minutes at night.
Chairman of the PUCSL Janaka Ratnayake issuing a statement said power cuts will not be enforced during examination hours.
Ratnayake said power cuts are being enforced as the Ceylon Electricity Board failed to enforce recommendations it tabled to minimise power cuts during the A/Level Exam.
The PUCSL said it has launched a programme to manage the demand for electricity and ensure a continous supply until the 17th of February.
According to this programme, the PUCSL hopes to save 350MW between 6pm and 10pm.
Ratnayake therefore requested the public, state institutions and the private sector to use electricity sparingly.
The PUCSL urged the public to minimise power usage by 50% between 6pm and 9pm at homes and requested private institutions to minimise usage between 6pm and 10pm, including by switching off lit-up billboards, name boards and lights inside buildings.
The PUCSL also requested that local government bodies and other institutions that maintain street lights to switch off street lights between 6pm and 10pm and for individuals and companies that possess generators to switch to generators between 7pm and 10pm.
