Police say 17,629 pornographic video clips and photos related to children have been uploaded to the internet between the 17th of June and the 28th of July.

The videos and images were uploaded through mobile phones, laptops, tabs and desktops.

Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspects have been identified while an operation to arrest the suspects will commence from today.

He said a special unit was established at the Children and Women Bureau to monitor pornographic content related to children, under the name National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.

The Senior DIG said the cyberspace is monitored by the Police for such illegal content adding that modern technology is being utilised to trace suspects who upload the material.

The Police Media Spokesman said if an individual is found to be circulating such videos and images in respect of child pornography, it is considered an offence under the Obscene Publications Act which is related to sexual harassment and exploitation adding that the law will be strictly enforced against those responsible.

He noted a joint investigation by the Children and Women Bureau and the Criminal Investigation Department is being conducted to trace the suspects.

He added individuals who shared and forwarded the pornographic videos and images will also face legal action.
