Police say 14 individuals have been arrested thus far over the murder of a Policeman in Kebithigollewa.
The Police sergeant died after being assaulted by a group of protesters in Kebithigollewa.
The 54-year-old officer, attached to the Kebithigollewa Police, was assaulted by villagers who were protesting over a wild elephant attack.
A heated situation arose during the protest.
The protest was staged in Rambekepuwewa along the Kebithigollewa-Padaviya road following the death of a woman in the area in a wild elephant attack.
Police attempted to control the situation last evening; however protesters assaulted the officers at the scene.
Subsequently, Police fired shots to the air to disperse the crowd.
During the commotion, the Police officer sustained injuries and was admitted to the Kebithigollewa Hospital.
He was transferred to the Anuradhapura General Hospital where he succumbed to injuries.
The deceased is a resident of Wariyapola.
Police said four persons including a Buddhist monk have been arrested over the incident.
