13 suspects arrested over the murder of the Police Sub Inspector, who died after being assaulted by villagers during a protest in Kebithigollewa on Monday (31), have been remanded.
The group was remanded till the 10th of November after being produced before the Kebithigollewa Magistrate’s Court this afternoon (2).
Police said 16 suspects were arrested over the incident, while one suspect who was found not to have any direct relation to the murder was released on Police bail.
Another suspect was detained for 48 hours for questioning while another suspect is currently in Police custody in order to be produced before Court.
The post-mortem examination of the Policeman was conducted today at the Anuradhapura Hospital while the Judicial Medical Officer determined that he succumbed following blows sustained to his head and the injuries caused to his skull.
The Police Sergeant was posthumously promoted to the rank of Sub Inspector.
The Police Media Division said the Sergeant was posthumously promoted by the Inspector General of Police as the officer passed away while discharging duties.
The 54-year-old officer, attached to the Kebithigollewa Police, was assaulted by villagers who were protesting over a wild elephant attack.
The protest was staged in Rambekepuwewa along the Kebithigollewa-Padaviya road following the death of a woman in the area in a wild elephant attack.
Police attempted to control the heated situation on Monday evening; however, protesters assaulted the officers at the scene.
