Minister of Labour Nimal Siripala de Silva says 12,000 persons have lost employment since the outbreak of the coronavirus.
Speaking in Parliament today, the Minister said the government carried out a survey to determine the number of individuals who lost employment owing to the pandemic. He said such persons were informed to come forward and provide their details.
Minister de Silva said the survey revealed that 12,000 persons lost employment and not hundreds of thousands as claimed by the opposition.
On a separate note, the Minister said the government’s fight to ensure the rights of estate workers have not been halted.
