Sri Lanka science minister attends IAEA nuclear energy conference in Incheon

Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Chrishantha Abeysena is representing Sri Lanka at the 6th International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Energy in Incheon, Korea, which began on Oct. 27 under the leadership of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT of the Republic of Korea, Bae Kyung-hoon.

The conference, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is being held until October 29. Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board Prof. Tushara Ratnayake and a delegation also took part.

The gathering is intended for high-level dialogues on the role of nuclear energy in contributing to meeting clean energy demand, energy security, the resilience of energy systems and sustainable development, and for discussion and exchange of ideas on key issues related to the development and deployment of nuclear energy. It is a platform for ministers, policymakers, senior officials and experts.

Addressing the conference, Prof. Abeysena stated that Sri Lanka is committed to developing a safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable power system and, in this context, is evaluating the role that nuclear energy can play in meeting future energy requirements. He also stated that safety, security and safeguards will be of fundamental importance.

The minister pointed out that the government's objective is not only to introduce nuclear energy, but to determine whether it can bring clear benefits to the country and contribute to building a safe, reliable, affordable and low-carbon emission power system. He also stated that international support is expected for Sri Lanka's currently ongoing nuclear energy study and planning program. He further expressed his continued commitment to evidence-based decision-making, strong institutions and international cooperation in building a sustainable energy future for the people.

Coinciding with the conference, the IAEA released its new report on the "Global Nuclear Power Development Outlook." IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi participated, along with a large gathering of ministers, government officials and nuclear experts representing countries worldwide.
