Sri Lanka reaffirms Non-Aligned Movement principles at 65th anniversary meeting

Sri Lanka has reaffirmed its commitment to the core principles of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), including peace, sovereignty, equality and the collective voice of developing nations.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra delivered the remarks at the High-Level Commemorative Meeting in Belgrade, Serbia, held to mark the 65th anniversary of the First Conference of Heads of State or Government of Non-Aligned Countries.

Deputy Minister Hemachandra said that Sri Lanka, a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, continues to uphold the Movement’s principles and values.

He noted that, under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Sri Lanka continues to pursue an independent and principled foreign policy based on constructive engagement with all countries, respect for sovereignty, multilateralism and peaceful coexistence.

He stressed the importance of solidarity among nations in responding to conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, natural disasters and economic crises. He called for stronger representation of developing countries in global institutions and advocated for a fairer and more equitable international financial system.

Sri Lanka also reaffirmed its support for a just and lasting settlement of the question of Palestine, in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

Deputy Minister Hemachandra said the 65th anniversary of the Belgrade Conference provides an opportunity to reflect on the history and achievements of the Non-Aligned Movement and to renew its unity and relevance in addressing future global challenges.
