Renovated Polonnaruwa Railway Station reopened to the public

The renovated Polonnaruwa Railway Station was officially reopened to the public recently (02), under the patronage of Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake.

The work was carried out under the "Dream Destination" public programme, which aims to upgrade and modernise 100 railway stations across Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Railways Department is implementing the programme under the guidance of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat and the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, with the support and financial contributions of private sector enterprises.

The Polonnaruwa Railway Station was renovated with financial support from the Araliya Group at a cost of Rs. 35 million.

The project upgraded staff offices, rest areas, the railway goods warehouse, facilities for clergy, male and female restrooms, supervisory offices, passenger and operational areas, signalling and telecommunications facilities, and internal and external access routes.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Housing Development T.B. Sarath, Polonnaruwa District National People's Power Members of Parliament Sunil Rathnasiri and Pathmasiri Bandara, Chairman of the Araliya Projects Group Dudley Sirisena, Additional Secretary of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat S.P.C. Sugeeshwara, Director H.P.S. Shantha, Chairman of the Polonnaruwa Municipal Council Lalith Thissekumara, local government representatives, government officials and a large number of area residents.
