Irrigation Department warns of minor flooding in Kalu Ganga floodplain

The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning that minor flooding may occur in low-lying areas of the Kalu Ganga floodplain within the next 24 hours. The department said the risk is due to significant rainfall in the upper catchment areas and continued showers.

The warning was issued today (26) following an analysis of water levels recorded at river gauges in the Kalu Ganga basin and prevailing rainfall conditions.

Low-lying areas in the Divisional Secretariat divisions of Pelmadulla, Nivithigala, Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama and Elapatha in Ratnapura District are at risk. In Kalutara District, the vulnerable areas include Ingiriya, Horana, Dodangoda, Millaniya, Bulathsinhala, Madurawala and Palindanuwara.

The department has urged residents in these areas, as well as motorists travelling through them, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. It added that relevant disaster management authorities have also been informed to take appropriate safety measures.
