Foundation stone laid for Prarthana Piyasa cancer treatment unit at Kalutara Teaching Hospital

The foundation stone for the “Prarthana Piyasa” four-storey Cancer Treatment Unit at the Kalutara Teaching Hospital was laid on September 2 under the patronage of Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. The facility is fully funded through a donation by Vasana Bakers proprietor Dayananda Bombuwala.

The building is scheduled to be completed within one year. It will bring cancer treatment services currently provided at three separate locations within the hospital premises under one roof, offering patients in the Kalutara District and surrounding areas more convenient and efficient access to treatment.

Cancer clinics will be on the first floor and a chemotherapy unit on the second. The third and fourth floors will comprise two residential wards with 24 beds each.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Jayatissa said the construction of the new facility was not merely the development of a four-storey building but an important step towards responding to a major health challenge facing the country.

The minister expressed his appreciation to Bombuwala and his wife for their generous contribution towards the construction of the cancer treatment unit.

Several religious leaders, Members of Parliament, government officials, medical professionals and representatives of the Kalutara business community were also present at the event.
